Callan Park Master Plan petition

Dear Premier,

The NSW government was presented with the Callan Park Master Plan over three years ago. It was developed by Leichhardt Council with the community, and was designed to protect, preserve and promote the historic Callan Park site.

I am calling on the government to implement the award winning Callan Park Master Plan which would see this wonderful parkland be preserved as a place for recreation, relaxation and mental health recovery. The lack of any decision by the government is very concerning for our community.

It is with only with a Trust within the properly funded Master Plan that the future of Callan park will be secure. I encourage you to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

    The Writer’s Centre is there… as is the College of the Arts. Despite its run down condition, the site is being used in many ways that promote the physical, mental and spiritual health of the community. In terms of the history of the site as a mental health facility, maybe now we should be thinking about prevention not cure. Simply walking the dog there kept me ‘sane’ on many occasions!

    Just because we have a Greens MP doesn’t mean the State Government should ignore his electorate. Setting up a trust to manage Callan Park is a no-brainer and won’t send the state broke. Act now, before the March election, and avoid the ignominy of being judged guilty of sitting on your hands for four years!

    I have lived opposite to Call an Park for nearly 10 years. In that time Master Plan has come to fruition. I am absolutely disgusted that after so many years the beauty of the park has not yet been preserved with necessary work to buildings been undertaken. Shame on you state government. It should be the priority not redevelopment!

    In the 19th century there were some compassionate people who organised the provision of the Callan Park site and earliest buildings for the aid of the mentally ill. This priceless heritage must be preserved for public use in the 21st century and managed by a suitable Trust.
