GLEBE PUBLIC SCHOOL LOSES FUNDING UNDER LIBERAL CHANGES

Glebe Public School is one of up to 200 schools which will lose money under the NSW Liberal government’s new funding model. The school will lose $12,321 in 2014 compared to 2013 funding levels.

Greens MP Jamie Parker said:

“It is absolutely disgraceful that schools are losing money at a time when they should be getting more funding to improve education opportunities and cater for increasing student numbers.

“Glebe Public School is a great school with the potential to become even better – it is simply irresponsible and cruel of this Liberal government to be removing funding when it should be increasing it.

“Almost one third of students at Glebe Public School are indigenous and the school has been doing excellent work in closing the achievement gap for its Aboriginal students.

“We should be working with schools to ensure that our children have the best possible start in life, not cutting funding and expecting principals and teachers to do more with less money.

“We need to support teachers and principals with the funding and resources they need to deliver world-class education to our children.

“State and Federal governments promised that funding for all schools in the non-government sector would increase at least 3 per cent next year, and now we see hundreds of public schools will be worse off.

“The Liberal government has got this wrong – a funding model that results in schools losing money is fundamentally flawed.

“I am calling on the Minister to reinstate this funding and commit to planning for the future of our children.

“A few weeks ago the Minster was telling parents they should be sending their kids to Glebe and now he is cutting funding for the school – it doesn’t make sense,” Mr Parker said.
