GREENS PRESENT RECOMMENDATIONS TO FIX CORRUPTION

September 18, 2014 MEDIA RELEASE

Today Greens MP Jamie Parker presented the Greens’ submission to the Panel of Experts on Political Donations which is investigating potential reforms to election funding laws.

Recently, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) heard the NSW Liberal party and its candidates received hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal donations from property developers to fund their 2011 election campaigns.

The expert panel, led by Kerry Schott is due to report back to the Premier by 31 December 2014.

“We must get rid of the corrosive influence of political donations and restore integrity to our democracy as a matter of urgency,” says Jamie Parker MP.

“Public confidence in the state government has plummeted to new lows.

“If the people of NSW are to have confidence in the March 2015 state elections, the government can’t wait for the panel’s findings. It must act now.

“The Greens’ submission proposes a workable, immediate solution to reduce political donations and overall expenditure, has introduced criminal sanctions and improved disclosure.”

You can view the submission here.

The panel will be hosting a series of roundtable discussions with leading academics and stakeholders. The roundtable sessions will be held on 24, 25 and 29 September at NSW Parliament House and members of the public are invited to attend.
