Local passengers will have an extra ferry route when private operators begin new peak hour services from Balmain to the city, Member for Balmain Jamie Parker said today.
“This is good news for Balmain ferry commuters but this is exactly the type of service that Sydney Ferries could be providing which would also bring the benefit of concession and myZone ticketing.” Mr Parker said.
The new service was the result of the Government’s decision to encourage more use of the harbour, and follows the calling for expressions of interest from the private sector.
Sydney Fast Ferries, a private operator currently providing services on the Manly route, will operate two new routes. One begins at Balmain West travelling via Woolwich, Greenwich Point and Birchgrove to Darling Harbour. There will be three morning peak services and two afternoon peak services.
The second new route is a loop service, beginning at Balmain East then Pyrmont, Darling Harbour and Circular Quay. This will deliver three morning peak services and two afternoon peak services.
“These new routes provide a direct link to Pyrmont and the city, giving more options for commuters during the busy peak to connect with major employment hubs.
“More services and improved capacity on public transport is good for Balmain and another opportunity for people to get out of their cars and onto the uncongested Sydney Harbour.
“These new services are fully commercial, operating at no cost to taxpayers, so the operators have control over fares and ticketing, as is currently the case with private operators on the Manly route.
The operators will be responsible for determining when the new services begin and updates will be provided as the details are determined over the coming months. The services will be provided at no cost to taxpayers, with operators having control over fares and ticketing. Services will be provided on three month renewable agreements.
