No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Read more on Jamie's record to save the Powerhouse

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

Yours sincerely,

We need a museum of technology, what major city doesn’t have one and we have a significant collection that needs to be seen as a whole not scattered around to other locations and reduced. You don’t create a history or historical places without protecting them.

The idea of relocating and rebuilding the museum doesn’t sit well with me.

The fact that the place itself is going to be smaller and not even designed as a museum means that it’s going to end up not showing some of the bigger exhibits at all. Sydney really shouldn’t loose something as unique as this museum. It’s loosing enough importance as-is and a few harbours and beaches won’t be enough to save the place.

I oppose the museum relocation. It seems senseless to destroy an established cultural institution to create another one elsewhere.

    Dear Premier,

Please do no proceed with the current plan. It would diminish the Powerhouse, Parramatta, and ultimately the current NSW Liberal government. You have access to whatever expert advice that you need. Don’t listen to me, listen to the experts.

This vandalism of a Sydney institution by the Berejiklian government should not be allowed to proceed. The two historic terraces in Parramatta should not be sacrificed for a monstrosity that architect Kusunoki himself, admits is not designed as a museum. What madness is this? I look at the vacant hole that was the demolished Allianz Stadium and I’m disgusted that nothing is safe from Gladys’ wrecking ball and her budget blowouts.

I am really appalled about the forthcoming closure of the powerhouse museum. Built with taxpayers money for the 1988 Bicentenary, it is a great, purpose built reuse of a historic building.

We should support a new museum in Parramatta, but NOT at the expense of closing this down. Also the current plan on a flood plain is irresponsible. And I have just read that the permanent collection will be kept in storage at Castle Hill.

Keep it in Our Powerhouse in Ultimo!

It is vandalism at its worse and I feel strongly that this plan should be stopped.

Thank you Jamie for your campaign to stop this.

Refresh the existing museum for a fraction of the cost of moving a smaller display to Parramatta. Sure build Parramatta a cultural centre, but don’t use the excuse of moving the Powerhouse to do it.

The Powerhouse belongs in Ultimo. Instead of moving a great collection why can’t we have two, just like museums all over the world. Why spend all this unnecessary money and risk damaging the collection and shutting most of it away.

This museum and its exhibits are unique in the world. Sydney has lost so many key historical and cultural sites that it is in danger of losing its soul. We cannot rely on beaches and harbour alone.

As one long-term resident from Britain once said to me, “Sydney is beautiful, but it’s dead at its core.”
