No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

    Please stop the sell off of government assets and buildings. The Powerhouse is a community asset there is already enough development in the area it is located to consider keeping this asset for future generations.

    It is not appropriate to sell the existing Powerhouse Museum site. The museum should be kept here.

    In fact, the powerhouse should be complimented with a second museum in Western Sydney, rather than as an alternative

    The Powerhouse Museum in the city needs to be retained for the benefit of all NSW residents. There also needs to be proper funding for increased museums and other cultural pursuit in Parramatta and further west, but this should not be funded by selling the current site for private residential development.


    It concerns me that the motivation for this is the desire to sell the current site for development, not the aim of increasing cultural outlets generally in the state and in Parramatta.


    Once land has been sold to private interests, it is gone from the public. I oppose this.

    It makes no sense to take away this asset from the people, including many schoolchildren who value and learn from it in the name of social equity. Build one specifically for the western suburbs, but don’t rob Peter to pay Paul.

    The wonderful part of Paris is its historical architecture. Don’t give in to property developers,otherwise why will anyone want to visit Sydney.

    A government showing unprecedented short-sightedness; a total lack of vision; a lack of empathy for the people it purports to represent; a philistine’s approach to the importance of culture and the arts in an urban community being, methodically and systematically starved, literally and metaphorically, of oxygen, of open green space and of its heritage. Furthermore, a government methodically seeking to destroy the fundamental fabric of our thriving urban communities by ill-conceived over-development; by super-highways, (a-la-Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy), that lead to no-where but which must be built and run through our bedrooms, living rooms and parks. To be finally rendered faceless and voiceless through the destruction of small effective local governance and the creation of more meaningless, could-not-care-less, large scale, government (mis)representation a-la forced (!) Council amalgamations.

    Anyone seen Democracy lately? She appears severely battered and bruised.

    Have our communities ever in the past been assaulted so mercilessly and relentlessly by those who are supposed to represent us?

    What! No more Powerhouse museum?? Property development over being educated, aware and informed in a most delightful, hands-on way, for young and old alike. Heartbreaking. Good on you for organizing this petition!

    This government has got it all wrong. Societies fare better when Arts and Culture are prioritised. An increase of pigeon hole accommodation will only bring more congestion and stress to city-dwellers. Promote decentralisation strategies instead.
