Exhaust smoke pollution - we want the truth

Please sign our letter to NSW Upper House MPs asking them to support a Parliamentary Inquiry into air pollution from WestConnex smoke stacks.

Air pollution related deaths in most developed countries have declined, but in Australia there was a 68% increase between 2005 and 2010 – and at least half of these deaths are due to road pollution.

Smoke stacks are being proposed within metres of schools, homes and hospitals; and could have an impact on the health of our communities, our children, and our environment.

We need to know the impacts of unfiltered smokestacks on our kids and our communities. Write to the Upper House MPs and ask them to support an Inquiry:

Dear Honourable Member,

RE: MOTION 1651 FOR HEALTH IMPACTS INQUIRY INTO MOTORWAY EMISSIONS & STACKS (19 OCTOBER 2017)

Like many in our community, I am extremely concerned about health impacts on our children and the broader community from unfiltered emissions stacks, especially those affecting schools, aged care homes, and hospitals in 82 suburbs, from Seaforth to Port Kembla.

I ask you to support the recent motion to the Legislative Council put forward by Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC calling for a health impacts inquiry into unfiltered smoke stacks.

The Premier and Ministers Roberts and Stokes are all on record vehemently opposing smoke stacks near schools, aged care homes, and hospitals in their own electorates due to health impacts.

I ask that the health impacts of all children in NSW be the subject of similar concern.

We filter cigarettes, so why can’t we filter smokestacks so close to some of our State’s most vulnerable people – the very young and the very old?

I ask is for an independent audit of the information to ensure the best possible outcome for our children, elders and community, ensuring adequate safeguards, monitoring, reporting and mitigation are in place to avoid any unnecessary suffering or ill effects upon them and the wider community.

Yours sincerely,
