40 electric buses coming to Leichhardt

The Leichhardt bus depot will soon be home to Australia’s largest electric bus fleet when 40 electric buses are deployed as part of a major clean energy initiative.

This is a big win for our community but it hasn't come easily.

Over the past year more than 3,000 people have signed our petition calling for electric buses for Sydney. We have delivered thousands of flyers to homes, met with the Minister for Transport and asked questions in NSW Parliament.

Thanks to your support we delivered a successful initial trial of four electric buses which is now being expanded tenfold.

The Leichhardt depot will be retrofitted to include:

  • 40 electric buses with a combination of 368 kWh and 422 kWh onboard batteries
  • five 120 kW electric bus chargers capable of charging two buses at a time
  • thirty one 80 kW electric bus chargers
  • 2.5 MW / 4.9 MWh of stationary batteries, and
  • 387 kW of rooftop solar PV

While the Federal government continues to delay action on climate change, your support is helping us to make the inner west a national leader in climate solutions.

The electric buses have already had rave reviews from passengers and drivers. They are clean, quiet and they don’t emit exhaust or vibrations like conventional buses.

Now with rooftop solar being installed along with new batteries, these electric buses will finally be powered by clean, green solar energy.

This initiative is a next step towards reducing emissions in public transport and heavy transport which account for around five per cent of Australia’s total carbon emissions.
