Callan Park Master Plan petition

Dear Premier,

The NSW government was presented with the Callan Park Master Plan over three years ago. It was developed by Leichhardt Council with the community, and was designed to protect, preserve and promote the historic Callan Park site.

I am calling on the government to implement the award winning Callan Park Master Plan which would see this wonderful parkland be preserved as a place for recreation, relaxation and mental health recovery. The lack of any decision by the government is very concerning for our community.

It is with only with a Trust within the properly funded Master Plan that the future of Callan park will be secure. I encourage you to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

    I worked at this hospital for over 10 years. The site has huge historic (not just monetary) value and has contributed significantly to the health and well being of many people and should continue to do so. I can see the gov vision for Sydney including the dense housing which, as it appears now in the inner west, is nothing but a blight on the landscape and the integrity of the city. It’s an ugly and short sighted vision you have, it is driven by money and bad taste!

    All the worlds great cities have spaces like Callan Park. If Sydney is to be considered amongst the worlds great cities, then Callan Park’s future needs to be secure.

    The Callan Park Master Plan should be implemented without any further delay and a Trust is needed to bring the Plan to fruition. Callan Park is a treasure and this opportunity should not be wasted.

    As an Australian and former resident of inner west Sydney, as frequent visitor to Leichhardt, I would love have Callan Park preserved for our generation and future generations. The master plan sounds like a healthy proposal for an inner city development. Please make things happen.

    I lived and worked in Sydney foe 27 years prior to my retirement. The Callan Park precinct is much needed Green Space in an overpopulated city and a site prime for proper preservation and National Trust listing.

    With the continuing intensification of development in the Inner West, it becomes more and more important to invest in the rehabilitation and sustainable use by the community of Callan Park – a precious community resource of metropolitan significance.


    We call on the state government to endorse the master plan prepared by Leichhardt Council (with significant community input/support), establish a Trust and allocate the necessary resources/governance arrangements to get Callan Park back on its feet and to avoid its continuing demolition by (state government) neglect.


    The state government has tried (and failed) over at least a decade to strategically plan and provide for a viable future for Callan Park, so why not give this community-endorsed master plan a go?
