EMERGENCY MEETING HEARS PERSONAL STORIES FROM DESPERATE KURDS

The Democratic Kurdish Community Centre will today hold an emergency public meeting in NSW parliament in an effort to attract attention to the situation in northern Syria.

Turkey began bombing Afrin on January 20 and has since begun a land invasion with the help of pro-Turkish Syrian opposition groups. The meeting will call for action from the Australian government and the international community to pressure Turkey to halt its military operation on the Kurdish region of Syria.

The event will include personal testimony from members of the Kurdish community from Afrin.

Commenting on the meeting, Jamie Parker MP says:

"As Australians, it is critical that we make a strong statement about the war going on in the Kurdish region in Syria to compel our government to do more.

“The world must not let the Kurdish people down again. Let’s not forget the history of the Kurdish people."

“Today we heard firsthand testimony from Mira Ibrahim, whose father and 90-yr-old grandmother are trapped in Afrin. We’re hoping that bringing the stories of innocent people who are suffering in Afrin to light will drive governments to take action.”
