Let’s make history for hens

Right now, we have a chance to change the lives of the millions of hens still suffering in battery cages in NSW.

The NSW Parliament is holding an inquiry into how eggs are produced in NSW and will investigate whether battery cages should still be used.

We know that hens suffer immensely when confined to battery cages. These intelligent, curious and social animals deserve a better life.

It’s never been more important to tell the NSW Government that Australians don’t support the use of battery cages.

SUBMISSION TO THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON THE USE OF BATTERY CAGES

Dear Committee members,

All animals deserve to be treated with respect and compassion.

Confining intelligent, curious social egg-laying hens to barren battery cages is cruel and unnecessary. In these cages, hens have the equivalent of an A4-size sheet of paper in floor space on which to live for the duration of their lives.

Not only can they not perform normal behaviours like nesting, foraging, scratching, and dustbathing, they cannot even extend their wings.

Battery cages have now been phased out in 28 nations and a number of international food businesses including major Australian and international brands are also moving ahead.

It is entirely feasible to produce safe, affordable, nutritious eggs without the cruelty of battery cages. I want to see the NSW Government act on the scientific evidence and the community’s expectations on animal welfare, and commence a phase out immediately.
