High Court decision a blow for Berejiklian and a win for unions, workers and democracy

The High Court decision to overturn the NSW Liberal party’s attempt to gag unions in the NSW election is a win for unions, workers and democracy say the NSW Greens.

Greens MP and Democracy Spokesperson Jamie Parker said:

“This law was struck down because the High Court saw it for what it was, a blatant attempt to put politician’s interests before those of the community.

“The Liberal Party’s laws gave millions more to politicians and cut in half the amount that community organisations could spend, and they did it without any evidence to back it up.

“The Greens voted against these laws when they were brought before Parliament and we welcome them being struck down by the High Court.

Greens MP and spokesperson for industrial relations David Shoebridge said:

“This is an embarrassing blow for the Berejiklian government, exposing once again their inability to get the basics right.

"This is a win for democracy, a win for unions and a win for working people, and it’s another self-inflicted wound for the Berejiklian government.

“The NSW Liberals were using these unfair laws to try and rig the upcoming state.

“Their plan was to cook the books in favour of politicians by putting limits on the amount unions and third parties could spend while giving more money to politicians,” Mr Shoebridge said.
