Leichhardt evictions expose housing failure

Residents in one of the Inner West’s last remaining affordable apartment blocks are facing eviction following the sale of their homes.

The apartment building includes 10 studios and 2 two bedroom apartments.

Commenting on the evictions, Jamie Parker MP for Balmain said:

“This apartment complex was one of the few truly affordable blocks left in our local area. Now it has been sold off, these residents are being forced to move out of homes they have been living in for over 20 years.

“I’m working with residents and have written to the agent to request an extension as several are in their late 80s and 90's.

“The fact is, residents of 16 William Street will likely have to move out of this area all together because there is simply not enough affordable and public housing in the Inner West. “This government needs to fundamentally shift their attitude to housing away from a for-profit system that favours the rich towards recognition that housing is a fundamental human right.

“People on low incomes need secure and stable housing to have a decent life and a stable base to nurture their family.

“Sydney has enjoyed big increases in supply over the past few years but affordability is getting worse not better. This government needs to start working on a more sophisticated solution than just increasing housing supply.
