Light rail extension to start next month: a win for the community

Greens MP Jamie Parker has welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Transport that work will begin on the Inner West Light Rail extension next month.

"After years of campaigning alongside the community for this vital piece of infrastructure, I'm delighted we finally have a start date for the extension of the Inner West Light Rail.

"I have raised this issue repeatedly in Parliament in my speeches, questions to the Minister and written questions on notice.

"The Government's decision to start work next month is testimony to the effectiveness of the community's dedication in maintaining pressure on the Government to begin construction.

"The extension will greatly benefit businesses along the route as well as thousands of commuters, providing efficient transport options to better connect the Inner West with the rest of the city.

"This is a great example of what we can achieve when community commitment joins with local Councils and Members of Parliament.

"Last week I asked the Government to ensure the Inner West Light Rail extension would be delivered in early 2014 and I will continue to maintain pressure to make certain it stays on track."
