Balmain is set to go green. This may come as surprise to those of you who have visited the peninsula suburb on any recent Saturday afternoon, with the crush of four-wheel-drives, SUVs and buses panting fumes up and down Darling Street, offering a dependable impression of the evacuation of Dunkirk.
However, the sitting Labor MP, Verity Firth, is hanging on by her fingernails: a mere 3.7 per cent swing would unseat her. And Jamie Parker, the first Greens mayor of Leichhardt, and a favourite for Greens preselection, put his hand up yesterday as the man to do the unseating.
''People have realised the government is tired, at the end of the road and out of ideas,'' Parker told The Diary.
