Greens MP Jamie Parker today won support from the Lower House of the New South Wales Parliament to protect the Independent Commission Against Corruption from any cuts to its funding ahead of the NSW Budget next month.
Mr Parker’s motion recognised the ICAC’s crucial work in promoting transparency and exposing corruption in NSW, and ensured it will continue to receive full and adequate funding for its present and future activities.
Mr Parker said: “Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen sustained attacks on the ICAC by the Liberals who are trying to undermine confidence in the Commission, and who would like to see its demise.
“In the upcoming state budget, the Baird government is likely to continue its slash and burn of government services and agencies, so the Greens believe it is critical to send a strong message that the work of the ICAC is vital to the public interest.
“The ICAC must be allowed to operate without impediments or fear of reprisals, budgetary or otherwise.
“While funding the ICAC is critical, learning the lessons from the hearings is more important. That is why I am calling on the Government to support my private member’s bill to ban donations from associated entities.”
