No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Read more on Jamie's record to save the Powerhouse

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

Yours sincerely,

It is an outrage to even think about moving the historically famous museum which has been great part of educating children(and parents) about science, art, design and history in a fun and exciting manner. It is serving also as an interesting forum where to educate children about sustainability and conservation of our beautiful planet: making it a popular destination for both school excursions and homeschooling venues of meeting in a safe learning environment.

It has hosted some of the most interesting exhibitions in the field of art and design, photography, fashion, science and cultural history. We can not afford to lose Powerhouse Museum from the heart of Australia’s most populated city. It is a museum that I see as a landmark in so many different ways.

I agree Western Sydney would need a similar museum of their own, but it is not a reason to relocate this important and purpose built museum that has served so many exactly where it is. I see it would be a great and irreversible loss for culture, not only for the people living in Sydney but also for all us who travel a fair distance from regional NSW. Powerhouse Museum is easily accessible with public transport of all kind and is easily incorporated for a great inner city outing with everything else that Sydney has to offer.

The Powerhouse Museum is great where it is. I would try to make admission cheaper to encourage minds to engage with the museum. Sydney’s West needs a museum that highlights all the cultures that make Western Sydney their home!

I love and appreciate the Powerhouse, and have done so for many years. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to dispose of such an exceptional museum, that is so centrally located in Sydney. I cannot image a government allowing the destruction of such a cultural icon.

Our country has a vast and diverse history, every artefact, every photograph is a piece of the tapestry that displays what is to be Australian. People from all over the world come to the Powerhouse to emerse themselves and discover how our country evolved. I also cannot understand why the Powerhouse would be closed after the re-development of the Goods Line has made the Powerhouse so accessible.

Keep the Powerhouse where it is, keep it as it is. Our nations story continues and we need the Powerhouse to be the custodian of this story. We need a place where we the public can come, bring our families and pass on our history.

Don’t touch the Powerhouse, leave it where it is. Add to it by building another museum in Sydney’s west, but please don’t sell the Powerhouse!

Absolutely disgusting. Is no history sacred in this country? Will we leave nothing for our future generations? Or will the Government fabricate cheap apartments that will barely last 10 years to gain fat wallets now in return for a wiped out past!

While a facility at Parramatta would be excellent and be easily reachable for those in the west of Sydny, it is a long way to go for those who are used to visiting museums in Sydney itself.
