No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Read more on Jamie's record to save the Powerhouse

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

Yours sincerely,

Instead of the sell off, an EXTRA Museum facility should be built for Western Sydney

Why destroy what is working and is a proven tourist attraction? The Powerhouse museum belongs in Sydney.

One of the most ridiculous ideas I’ve heard from a strata of government with real expertise in that department. “I know – let’s move the British Museum to Harringey.” Bogan fools.

It’s a disgrace the way governments bow to developers’ wishes. The Powerhouse Museum is a special place in a special building. To move to Parramatta and sell off the historic industrial building is ridiculous and a very costly proposal.

Speaking personally, my husband worked in the Powerhouse and later when it became a museum my daughter worked there.

    Please rethink this foolish proposal.

I have been a member for 15 years and have learned so much about Australia and Sydney through the Powerhouse Museum. There use to be more publicity about the exhibitions. Currently there are 4 excellent exhibitions on

A Fine Possesion a history of jewellery with excellent pieces

    Collette Dinnigans life work

Wartime Innovation about WW1 and Disobedient Objects from the VA museum London

Who knows about them, where are the street banners the ads???

Other than this there is the permanent collections and also so much on for children. The new entrances, the Goods Line and the whole area coming alive would make it a must go place. The Museum seems to be it’s own worse enemy, they hardly need the Government to get rid of them to Parramatta.

This is a museum for the best of our design and technology! Make it Australia’s V&A – it has the basic collection. Stop selling off our heritage sites (and our heritage) to developers please.

My view is that the Powerhouse collection is large enough to allow successful operation in two locations: the existing one for inner Sydney residents and the new one for Western Sydney residents. There’s no doubt it would be a vibrant addition to Casula, but why deprive inner Sydney residents of this great facility in the process?

Keep the Powerhouse museum where it is. Open another Powerhouse in Parramatta to serve western Sydney and take some of the overflow collection.

even in the narrow terms of this as a tourist asset – this is insane.

We can reverse our gifting of some rare artworks to the Museum – they should be accessible to everyone, and another’s friends important collection gifted – he should ask for it to be returned or re-gifted etc ? Need to get legal advice on this.
