POULTRY REVIEW SUBMISSION

Last chance to make a submission to free hens from battery cages once and for all.

To the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines review,

I write to ask that the Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry be amended to include a nationwide ban of battery cages and cruel farming practices including but not limited to debeaking, forced moulting, and food and water deprivation.  It is unacceptable that these animals have been condemned to a life of cruelty and exploitation just for the production of cheap eggs.

The Australian public refuses to allow these cruelties to continue and it is time that the standards reflect that.

Good animal welfare is a combination of physical and mental wellbeing and natural living. None of these are currently being granted to egg-laying hens. They need space to move, nest and behave naturally.

So I ask you, please join the ACT, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada in banning the battery cage, debeaking and other cruel farming methods and help improve the lives of millions of hens all around Australia.

Kind regards,

Intensive farming using cages is cruel, inhumane and outdated. A civilised society cannot support such barbaric techniques.

It’s reassuring that this is a priority area.I believe we are not fully human in a good sense if we won’t recognise the welfare needs of our fellow beings.

The life of a hen right now is no life at all. Industry, government and consumers are responsible for the horror conditions of farms and slaughterhouses and this is a vital opportunity to show empathy and intelligence in changing a truly brutal and broken system. Please, do it for the hens, those beautiful gentle birds who deserve to live comfortable, natural lives.

It’s not hard to keep hens and the eggs are much better quality when fresh. Stop the mass production and old eggs being sold, they just don’t taste or cook well.

It’s hard to believe these barbaric practices still exist.

Yes the price of eggs may rise. Yes it will require significant industry adjustment. And yes it can be done. The alternative does not belong in a civilized country. Shirley Fitzgerald

Egg production that depends upon cruel battery caged hens, who never have an opportunity to behave in a natural way on outside fields, must be outlawed.
