Keep sugar out of school canteens

sugar_in_schools_page.jpg

NSW guidelines for food labelling in school canteens are more than 10 years old, and out of step with national and international standards.

This petition of citizens of NSW brings to the attention of the House that the Australian dietary guidelines were updated in 2013 and as a result food and drinks containing added sugar were shifted into the "limited intake category" yet school canteen guidelines in NSW still rely on outdated 2003 national guidelines.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to undertake an open and public review of the NSW Healthy Schools Canteen Strategy to bring it into line with the 2013 Australian dietary guidelines, reduce added sugar in school canteens and prioritise the long-term health of children.

Pledge your support for our campaign to reduce added sugar in schools on this online petition and we will send you a paper petition through the mail.

Im not a parent, but see parents blamed again & again for childhood obesity issues. Ill add which lead to long term health problems in adult years, & further costs to public health. I believe its a social problem, not solely parenting problem. Schools have a responsibility to ensure kids are educated & provided the option to eat healthy. (especially considering they spend more waking hours of the week in school, not at home.) The premier made a commitment & goal to reduce the issue of childhood obesity within the next 10 years (was it by 5%?) I dont understand how this not updated in school canteens as part of the strategy.

Either put a tax on all junk food or just ban the worst as other European countries have done.

Government needs to get back to looking after the people and environment instead of their back pocket as well as future cushy jobs.
