Keep sugar out of school canteens

sugar_in_schools_page.jpg

NSW guidelines for food labelling in school canteens are more than 10 years old, and out of step with national and international standards.

This petition of citizens of NSW brings to the attention of the House that the Australian dietary guidelines were updated in 2013 and as a result food and drinks containing added sugar were shifted into the "limited intake category" yet school canteen guidelines in NSW still rely on outdated 2003 national guidelines.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to undertake an open and public review of the NSW Healthy Schools Canteen Strategy to bring it into line with the 2013 Australian dietary guidelines, reduce added sugar in school canteens and prioritise the long-term health of children.

Pledge your support for our campaign to reduce added sugar in schools on this online petition and we will send you a paper petition through the mail.

I have been a strong advocate of reducing sugar for people of all walks of Life. I wrote my first cookbook, Naturally Sweet and Sugar-Free in the 70’s when there wasn’t much consciousness about sugar. I keep writing and teaching about "sugar-free desserts and foods, wholefoods , etc. and How can I help ?

My company Bodsquad Australia is actively involved in attempting to reduce sugar across the board. #BeSugarConscious We are The Muesli – one of less than a handful of Low Sugar options on breakfast cereal shelves – with on-packet messaging that actually points to Low Sugar. We are educating people about sugar content of packaged foods through The One Line Rule and #BeSugarConscious.

I was a high school teacher for 30+ years and saw the ‘diet’ offered in canteens change over the years. Although the biggest change I saw was more about the change from ‘obvious’ sugars to ‘hidden sugars and the so-called ’healthy’ options offered that still had far too many sugars both in variety and types and volumes. bring on more serious change.

A focus also needs to be on giving children the education in regards to the impact sugar is having on their health. Hopefully this will provide them with information that they can take home to their families too
