Keep sugar out of school canteens

sugar_in_schools_page.jpg

NSW guidelines for food labelling in school canteens are more than 10 years old, and out of step with national and international standards.

This petition of citizens of NSW brings to the attention of the House that the Australian dietary guidelines were updated in 2013 and as a result food and drinks containing added sugar were shifted into the "limited intake category" yet school canteen guidelines in NSW still rely on outdated 2003 national guidelines.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to undertake an open and public review of the NSW Healthy Schools Canteen Strategy to bring it into line with the 2013 Australian dietary guidelines, reduce added sugar in school canteens and prioritise the long-term health of children.

Pledge your support for our campaign to reduce added sugar in schools on this online petition and we will send you a paper petition through the mail.

Just taxing high sugar drinks is not the answer. Tax all high sugar, high salt and hi fat foods would be more relevant. Schools need to make healthy food attractive.

Take note that sugar is now the world’s biggest addiction, as it is surreptiously added into every prepared food/drink.

Consumers take it in without proper checking of labels or the known contents.

I would like for my children not to be exposed to the tempting and addictive sugars that are in what is thought to be “healthy food”.
