Community wins $500m to restore the Powerhouse

Almost a year after they tried to demolish it, this morning the NSW Government committed half a billion dollars to revamp our Powerhouse Museum.

This will be the first major government investment in the museum since it was founded. The funds will see the museum equipped to stage international touring exhibitions as well as works to reorient the entrance.

Wins like this don’t happen by accident. Over five years of campaigning we have built a powerful alliance to defend the Powerhouse, promote arts and culture, and protect Sydney’s heritage.

Thank you to the thousands of people who signed my petition, to all the residents who have joined me to meet with the Minister over the years and everyone involved in the Powerhouse Museum Alliance and Save the Powerhouse.

While this is a huge step forward, more work lies ahead.

The government are sticking to their plan to destroy heritage properties in Parramatta. I’m strongly backing the campaign to defend Willow Grove and will continue to work with the community in western Sydney to press the government on the issue.

I am committed to ensuring that this win marks a turning point in the way we value arts, heritage and culture in NSW.
