POULTRY REVIEW SUBMISSION

Last chance to make a submission to free hens from battery cages once and for all.

To the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines review,

I write to ask that the Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry be amended to include a nationwide ban of battery cages and cruel farming practices including but not limited to debeaking, forced moulting, and food and water deprivation.  It is unacceptable that these animals have been condemned to a life of cruelty and exploitation just for the production of cheap eggs.

The Australian public refuses to allow these cruelties to continue and it is time that the standards reflect that.

Good animal welfare is a combination of physical and mental wellbeing and natural living. None of these are currently being granted to egg-laying hens. They need space to move, nest and behave naturally.

So I ask you, please join the ACT, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada in banning the battery cage, debeaking and other cruel farming methods and help improve the lives of millions of hens all around Australia.

Kind regards,

Egg production that depends upon cruel battery caged hens, who never have an opportunity to behave in a natural way on outside fields, must be outlawed.

As a veterinarian, I fully understand and have observed first hand the more horrific aspects of the poultry industry. The footage one sees in relation to this campaign says it all. It must stop.

It’s past time for an end to the brutal and entirely unnecessary practices of battery hen farming. Please don’t wait any longer to end this cruelty.

This cruelty must stop…all hens should be free-range and free-range is 1500 hens per hectare or less, not 10, 000. Open-range is even better.

Absolutely disgusting practice – this is why people who care about animals buy free-range

No creature needs to be treated with cruelty. They feel pain and suffering just as much as you do. A happy hen lays happy eggs!

We must stop valuing profits over the welfare of living creatures. There is no need for hens to suffer in putrid conditions just so we can save a dollar at the grocery store!

These regulations are why many people won’t eat eggs anymore, let alone fowls which cannot be genuinely shown to be raised in non-cruel environments.
