Support shore to ship power

Everyone has a right to breathe clean air and to be protected from the health effects of air pollution.

The NSW Government knows that toxic pollution from cruise ships is damaging to human health and the environment but they say protecting our air by installing shore to ship power at White Bay is too expensive.

According to a feasibility study conducted in 2017, around $7.4 million of the cost of installing shore power is down to the design, supply and installation of a 33kV cable to connect White Bay Cruise Terminal to the substation at Rozelle.

Detailed plans for the Sydney Metro West have just revealed that the government is already planning to lay a cable to supply power to White Bay for that project.

Installing a conduit to that cable means the government won’t have to pay for the design, supply and installation of another cable for shore power.

This will reduce the cost of shore power at White Bay by around $7.4 million – almost 20%!

Write to the Minister for Transport today to tell him to install a conduit to the Sydney Metro power supply and commit to installing shore power!

Dear Minister for Transport,
I am a strong supporter of the need to install shore to ship power at White Bay Cruise Terminal. This technology provides a solution to the ongoing problems of noise and air pollution generated by cruise ships and would give residents much needed reprieve when ships are berthed.
According to the original feasibility study released in 2017, approximately 20% of the cost of shore to ship power was attributed to the design of a 33kV cable connection to the WBCT and the supply and installation of the 33kV cable.
These costs account for $7.4 million of the total estimated cost of $36 million – just over 20%.
The Sydney Metro West is soon to embark on design and installation of a cable connection from the Rozelle substation to White Bay.
Installing the cable connection to Sydney Metro West with a conduit to permit power access to the White Bay Cruise Terminal will reduce the cost of shore power and impact the outcome of the feasibility study currently underway. Shore power is already implemented in many ports in USA and Canada, China has announced that it will mandate its use, as has Europe. It’s time for Australia to catch up.
I urge you to take advantage of this massive savings opportunity and install shore power at White Bay Cruise Terminal.
