Jamie Parker MP today met with the Administrator of the Inner West Council Richard Pearson and residents of the Leichhardt community concerned about the irresponsible and overzealous trimming of trees in their streets.
The meeting emphasised to the Administrator that the community expects the Inner West Council to work for residents and ensure Ausgrid stop vandalising our local street trees.
As a result of weeks of advocacy by Jamie and local residents for Council to take firmer action, the Administrator has agreed to meet this afternoon with the Acting CEO of Ausgrid, Trevor Armstrong, and discuss ways to minimise the harmful and destructive tree cutting being carried out by Ausgrid contractors in Leichhardt and surrounding suburbs.
"Street trees give character, habitat, shade and elegance to Leichhardt’s streets and are an essential and much loved feature of our neighbourhoods. To see them so badly chopped – in many cases down to unsightly stumps – has caused a great deal of distress in the community. I remain absolutely committed to ensuring there is full and transparent reform of the practices of Ausgrid and their contractors," Mr Parker said.
"Hundreds of residents have now signed our petition to force Ausgrid to rein in this excessive tree cutting which is ruining our streetscape and affecting native wildlife. It’s a tribute to the passionate local residents that the Administrator has now agreed to take up this important matter with Ausgrid directly."
