No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Read more on Jamie's record to save the Powerhouse

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

Yours sincerely,

This is outrageous. The Powerhouse museum is centrally located and readily accessible to people visiting from all over. It makes a great day trip – Powerhouse + Darling Harbour. What a selfish and short sighted notion.

No!!! The powerhouse museum must not sold. My children’s love of learning is in no small way linked to the decade we have spent exploring the museums exhibits. A wonderful building that should stay in public hands.

The population density in the inner city area is unsustainable. The roads can’t cope with the cars. I don’t know what’s happening down in the sewers. I’m fed up with the Liberal gov giving public land to developers – and for a pittance.

I have been visiting the Powerhouse since I was a child. I have taken my children there and look forward to taking my grandchildren soon.

It is a historical icon of Sydney, please leave it alone.

We need both facilities – there is enough stored materials not currently on display in present Powerhouse facility to easily establish a second display space and public amenity in Western Sydney with little effort.

As I believe that there are record numbers of new web start-ups occurring on the PHM doorstep, what gains are there in moving the museum to Parramatta? I’ll bet any relocated museum will be built adjacent to the existing museum warehouses, which aren’t at Parramatta; those are in the Hills.

It is simply absurd to destroy a significant museum site in central Sydney. There must be provision for cultural facilities in western Sydney IN ADDITION to those in the centre. It is time the arts were given greater priority by the NSW government.

There would a MASSIVE drop in visitor numbers. People from overseas and interstate with limited time won’t make the effort to head to Parramatta.

It’s current location is CENTRAL for the ENTIRETY Sydney and the surrounding areas of Wollongong, the Central Coast/Newcastle. Sydney is not JUST the Western Suburbs!

I agree that different areas of Sydney should have cultural institutions, but to uproot an institution with so much history is a travesty.

The $10million would be better spent establishing a regional gallery in a destination town. Just look at Bendigo gallery, or the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams,USA. People FLOCK to these regional centres- boosting the economy and enriching the area.
