No WestConnex mid-point tunnel site in Leichhardt

Sign our letter telling the Minister for WestConnex we don't want a damaging and dangerous tunnel site in Leichhardt.

Dear Minister

As a member of the local community I believe that the previously proposed Darley Road site is patently unacceptable as a mid point tunnel location for WestConnex.

This mid point tunnel excavation site will remain for up to four years, with significant traffic and safety impacts both on residents and people across the inner west region.

Residents of Leichhardt do not want a drill site. We are highly concerned about the traffic and safety impacts both on local residents and people across the Inner West region. We therefore call on you to cancel any plans to drill at the Darley Road site in Leichhardt.

This is yet another example of the kind of planning on the run which has been characteristic of the flawed WestConnex project since the start, and one more reason why it should be abandoned.

I live 2 blocks from Darley Road and I absolutely do not want a drill site near my home. I also do not want a drill site near the High School.

7 Darley Road is a highly inappropriate site for numerous reasons including the fact that darley Road is an arterial road and the spine of Leichhardt. It cannot handle the level of traffic now without having hundreds of spoil trucks on the street every day reducing the traffic to a standstill and causing even further chaos and turning many local streets into rat runs. This site was declined on 3 occasion by Leichhardt Council for its current use due to road issues and also the site could not accommodate 60 delivery trucks daily. How is it possible that it could accommodate hundreds of B Double trucks every day.

29 Derbyshire Road has the same access restrictions. No trucks could enter the proposed site via William Street as two buses cannot even pass one another to enter and exit the bus depot. In addition the site is next to Leichhardt Secondary School and a children’s playground within metres from the site. The mere suggestion of this sites suggest very little thought or consideration has been given to the dangers of this site to children attending the school and the health implications of the dust and pollution and the noise which will impact on learning.

It is about time in this incredibly wasteful and ill-conceived project took into account the community concerns and also the need to planning, transparency and honest open communication, something that WestCONnex has failed to demonstrate to date.

Inner west residents are being caused severe disruptions due to the proposed new toll road, (that many residents from outer west Sydney are not in favour of either). The vast majority of residents of both inner & outer west Sydney want better public transport options. It’s only the people who stand to profit from the toll roads that are so in favour of it. And sadly their power gives more volume to their voices over ours.
