No WestConnex mid-point tunnel site in Leichhardt

Sign our letter telling the Minister for WestConnex we don't want a damaging and dangerous tunnel site in Leichhardt.

For more details about the proposed mid point tunnel site, please go to http://www.jamieparker.org/tunnel.

Dear Minister

As a member of the local community I believe that the previously proposed Darley Road site is patently unacceptable as a mid point tunnel location for WestConnex.

This mid point tunnel excavation site will remain for up to four years, with significant traffic and safety impacts both on residents and people across the inner west region.

Residents of Leichhardt do not want a drill site. We are highly concerned about the traffic and safety impacts both on local residents and people across the Inner West region. We therefore call on you to cancel any plans to drill at the Darley Road site in Leichhardt.

This is yet another example of the kind of planning on the run which has been characteristic of the flawed WestConnex project since the start, and one more reason why it should be abandoned.

Yours sincerely,

The construction & operational impact analysis on communities lacks adult EI.

To destroy urban livability & community health with years of construction. The unfiltered exhaust stacks & portals a powerful source of concentrated toxins into homes and schools. The dumping of tens thousands more vehicles each day on roads fundamentally incapable of absorbing more traffic. The chaining of commuters to their cars with the failure to offer alternatives. The expensive tolls that will cause more financial hardship to families struggling with mortgages or rent.

It is time to put this old fashioned discredited notion of addressing congestion with more roads out of its misery.

Repurpose Westconnex to be a modern public transport solution that will benefit the public. Not the private profits of tollroad companies. It’s not too late to take a breath and rethink.

I am completely opposed to this entire ill-conceived WestCONnex Tollway project, which will do nothing to solve Sydney’s transport problems and will only enrich construction companies and Transurban. Sydney desperately needs an efficient and coherent public transport system, not more money spent on roads that just encourage an even more car-dependant city.

It is thoughtless madness that they are proposing a dive site next to a High School. This will affect our childrens health and safety.

If there was a private school impacted it wouldn’t even be considered.

This site will affect the already small area of open space the school has, hard won over years of lobbying and shared with local sporting teams.

It is also next to a park and just off the main street of Leichhardt, already a narrow road with housing and limited access, and buses.

We must stand as a community to make sure this doesn’t happen.

It is totally unacceptable to have a dive site with all its associated noise, dust, and truck movements adjacent to a school.

I note that upon your appointment as Minister for WestConnex, you asked that consideration be given to all the commuters from Western Sydney stuck in traffic after Concord. I suggest that you look at where Western Sydney commuters are travelling. A good place to start is to ask the Transport Performance Analytics (TPA) section of TfNSW to run some numbers. You will find that nine of the top ten destinations for Western Sydney commuters are within Western Sydney. The other one is the Sydney CBD.

In your electorate of Penrith, around 2,000 commuters are travelling to the City. More than 80 percent are on the train. Less than 350 are driving. You should be advocating for the diversion of funds from WestConnex to improve access within Western Sydney as well as upgrading the western train line.

It is also worth noting that, while WestConnex is being promoted as solving Western Sydney congestion, not one cent is being spent west of Parramatta.

WestCONnex is toxic in every way – to the air, the ground, our communities and, particularly, the toxic politics that are pushing this massively destructive unnecessary tollway.

No drill site in Leichhardt. We need a world class public transport system – not more toxic toll roads.
