To destroy urban livability & community health with years of construction. The unfiltered exhaust stacks & portals a powerful source of concentrated toxins into homes and schools. The dumping of tens thousands more vehicles each day on roads fundamentally incapable of absorbing more traffic. The chaining of commuters to their cars with the failure to offer alternatives. The expensive tolls that will cause more financial hardship to families struggling with mortgages or rent.
It is time to put this old fashioned discredited notion of addressing congestion with more roads out of its misery.
Repurpose Westconnex to be a modern public transport solution that will benefit the public. Not the private profits of tollroad companies. It’s not too late to take a breath and rethink.
If there was a private school impacted it wouldn’t even be considered.
This site will affect the already small area of open space the school has, hard won over years of lobbying and shared with local sporting teams.
It is also next to a park and just off the main street of Leichhardt, already a narrow road with housing and limited access, and buses.
We must stand as a community to make sure this doesn’t happen.
I note that upon your appointment as Minister for WestConnex, you asked that consideration be given to all the commuters from Western Sydney stuck in traffic after Concord. I suggest that you look at where Western Sydney commuters are travelling. A good place to start is to ask the Transport Performance Analytics (TPA) section of TfNSW to run some numbers. You will find that nine of the top ten destinations for Western Sydney commuters are within Western Sydney. The other one is the Sydney CBD.
In your electorate of Penrith, around 2,000 commuters are travelling to the City. More than 80 percent are on the train. Less than 350 are driving. You should be advocating for the diversion of funds from WestConnex to improve access within Western Sydney as well as upgrading the western train line.
It is also worth noting that, while WestConnex is being promoted as solving Western Sydney congestion, not one cent is being spent west of Parramatta.
