No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Read more on Jamie's record to save the Powerhouse

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

Yours sincerely,

We need The PowerHouse Museum right where it is and why not build a 2nd in Parramatta as the museum has so much in storage it could come out for the public to see.

It would not be good. It is great where it is. We can have a smaller version at Parramatta and retain the current site.

Coming from northern NSW, I look forward to visiting the Powerhouse Museum when I am in Sydney. If it has to be moved, I am strongly opposed to selling this iconic building. At least use it for public housing and keep it as a public asset. Too much of Sydney has been sold to developers .

The Powerhouse Museum is a historical part of Sydney’s industrial history. If you knock that down why not knock down The Rocks, which the government almost had done at the time before people were against the idea. Why not scrap our historical steam locomotives, and please don’t, they offer some backdrop of our city’s industrial history. No matter what impact it made, the young generation would never get an opportunity to witness a part of Sydney’s past. If you take away historical things and replace them with modern stuff then you’re destroying living proof of the past.

The Powerhouse Museum is such an important part of the public estate, and the building itself and its site are integral to its outstanding value as a museum. It would be an act of venality and cultural vandalism to sacrifice it on the altar of ‘development’.

Visits to The Powerhouse figure happily in the childhood memories of my children and my grandchildren should be able to look forward to same unique pleasure. Houses can be anywhere. The Powerhouse is an integral part of the state and national heritage. What’s the matter with this country???

The Powerhouse is my favourite museum in Sydney. We visit by train from Newcastle.

With the influx of new residents in the city and inner urban area, it is imperative to maintain (and indeed expand) the current cultural landscape and amenity.
