No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

    Do not let the developers get the site – it is a magnificent public space which lends itself to the history of technology because of its previous use and the infrastructure and resonance still left in the buildings.

    Disappointing the State Government does not want to value its past heritage. I don’t think London would sell of its iconic museums no matter how crowded London got. By selling heritage nothing much will be left to sell in the future. Baird will be remembered as the Sell Out Premier.

    Not even in the museums of London would you find a working steam engine from the 1780s. The Bank of England even put the Powerhouse’s engine on a 50 pound note, and now the NSW Government thinks it’s a good idea to dismantle it from its massive wall at Ultimo? Such vulgar and mediocre thinking.

    It is wrong to sell off our cultural history and buildings in the centre of Sydney. These buildings provide us with a unique character and identify our culture. This is a criminal act of destroying and homogenising who we are. You have no mandate. You have no right. This cultural heritage is irreplaceable and needs to be protected for future generations to come. Stop this wanton destruction all in the name of a fast buck NOW!

    The sell off of public assets and the appropriation of public land to powerful private interests which is accelerating under this Liberal Government is unacceptable and must stop. The Powerhouse is part of Sydney’s industrial history which is rapidly being erased. It must stay at Pyrmont and while we are thinking about keeping our built heritage in public hands maybe we could do something to stop the sale of the Education and Lands Department buildings in Bridge Street.
