No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

    My Dad was part of the team that turned a sad old powerhouse into a fabulous interactive museum. I remember visiting him onsite and being amazed that there was an ice breaker boat in the building.

    The Powerhouse is a treasure that belongs to the people of Sydney.

    My kids love the Powerhouse and I know of many more in the Inner West and City that would sorely miss the learning opportunities the Powerhouse offers.

    40% of Powerhouse users are tourists and visitors to Sydney. They will not travel out west to a neo-Powerhouse. Moving it is destroying it. Those that do this will have to take full responsibility.

    I love the Powerhouse Museum – it is placed in the perfect position near academia institutions, in the tourist centre and in the central location of the city.
