No privatisation: keep the Powerhouse petition

Read more on Jamie's record to save the Powerhouse

Dear Premier,

I am writing to strongly protest against the sale of the Powerhouse building in Ultimo to property developers. This building is an integral part of Sydney’s unique landscape and should be kept for the public to enjoy.

The Powerhouse Museum is an important part of the city’s cultural life, and to see the building converted into apartments and taken away from the community is a disaster for all Australians.

Nationally significant buildings should be kept in public hands to ensure their preservation and long-term public use, rather than sold off to the highest bidder.

Yours sincerely,

Although I understand the desire and need for relocation, I feel an integral part of the PHM’s character is its location and history. It is something that must not be lost in order to retain its identity.

Certainly it’s crucial that big changes are made to ensure the PHM’s ongoing viability, this is not something that should be on the table.

Keep the big museums in the city where visitors find it easy to get to – have regional museums for local history and interest

The powerhouse museum should be kept in its present position and another extension of it should be built for Parramatta, so that the extensive collection can be more adequately housed and displayed. Both cities need this cultural icon. The Liberal Government seems to have an obsession to sell off buildings, spaces and land that belongs and should stay in public ownership. Apartments do not add to the cultural vibrancy of our city.

I have enjoyed my visits to the Powerhouse Museum. I think it is a good oppprtunity for people to come into town and also experience the sites as well.

Don’t rob Peter to pay Paul. The western suburbs of Sydney deserve their own education and cultural facilities.

North Parramatta historical precinct would be ideal for a new Powerhouse Museum.

The Powerhouse is a brilliant technological museum of international standard. Why on earth should Sydney throw it away?
